About

Since its inception in 2005 (Year of the Rooster), the Upper Dublin Chinese-American Association (UDCA) has played a number of active roles in, and made consistent contributions to the greater Upper Dublin community. UDCA has joined Upper Dublin School District to co-sponsor Chinese Lunar New Year celebration events, donated over $7000 since 2007 to the UD Education Foundation (UDEF) to support education related activities, and sponsored two after school programs, including a math club at Sandy Run Middle School (SRMS). From 2016 onward, UDCA-sponsored scholarships have been awarded annually to two outstanding UDHS graduating seniors who have qualified as National Merit Finalists while maintaining excellent extracurricular performance records. UDCA became a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization in 2005. Two previous presidents are Dr. Fubao Wang (2003 - 2004) and Mr. Shuhong Liu (2004 - 2019).

Mission

The mission of UDCA is to support UD Chinese Americans by promoting engagement, fostering communication, and enhancing greater understanding among members in local communities and American society at large.

Board Members

President's Welcome

I am honored to follow in the footsteps of Presidents Shuhong Liu and Xinkai Kong and become the 4th UDCA President. I was a high school physics teacher about 40 years ago and am currently a college professor in teacher education. I moved to Upper Dublin in 2011 and have served on the UDCA board since 2013. More recently, I have become interested in conversations related to Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging, from an Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) perspective. While serving as a co-chair of the UDSD Asian American Students and Families Committee, I worked with Dr. Cynthia Song and other community members to initiate the inaugural district-wide AAPI Heritage Month Celebration event in 2017. In May of 2022, supported by a group of enthusiastic UDCA students and parents, Dr. Jianhua Zhao and I co-founded an Intercultural Club, aiming to promote a deeper understanding and mutual respect among our communities by engaging in culture-related activities, service, learning, and education. I am also passionate about the integration of AAPI aspects into curriculum and instruction, as well as the development of our children’s soft skills, leadership skills, and overall well-being. I sincerely invite all UDCA members to join together on our journey. Together and by association, let’s connect and build a supportive and warm environment for our members in the community. Let’s serve, inspire, and touch the hearts. 千里之行,始于足下。Together, we are surely and steadily marching toward a brighter future!

Sincerely,
Ling Liang
President, UDCA

This section highlights past initiatives that played an important role in strengthening the community. Among these were the association’s COVID-19 Task Force which provided support, resources, and coordination for families during the pandemic, and the Table Tennis Club, which brought members together through recreation and friendly competition. While these programs are no longer active, they reflect the organization’s commitment to serving and connecting the community in meaningful ways.

Covid-19 Task Force

Amidst the COVID-19 crisis, we, as a group of concerned Upper Dublin students and parents, initiated this task force to help the greater UD community during these challenging times. Students and parents have led and participated in projects to assist individuals and groups who have been affected by the quarantine and stay-at-home orders.

Educational Resources Database
UDCA provided a comprehensive (though certainly not exhaustive) list of some excellent online resources, many of which we as current and former Upper Dublin students have found extremely helpful. They are organized in an easily searchable database so that students and teachers alike can find videos, simulations, or online lessons to suit their needs.
COVID-19 Resources
UDCA also provided a convenient hub for information, linking to a number of useful external sources including the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and Johns Hopkins University. It also hosts PDFs of several handbooks, information from journal articles and various other outlets, and graphics that compactly illustrate information from the World Health Organization (WHO), CDC, and other organizations. All are compiled by Chinese American professionals and volunteers.

Table Tennis Club

In early 2018, with the support of the UDCA Board and Mr. Xiao Yu from Peace Valley Chinese Christian Church (PVCCC), the UDCA Ping Pong Club was established and led by Ms. Ying Lu, a World Class Table Tennis player.

Throughout the years it served as a convenient and comfortable venue for table tennis, general fitness and other physical activity for residents of Upper Dublin and its neighboring townships. Each Tuesday evening, those table tennis enthusiasts eagerly showed up to exchange tips and discuss experiences, in addition to making new friends. Coach Ying Lu also gave brief lessons in the midst of her busy schedule, often accompanied by many jovial onlookers. Since its inception, UDCA Ping Pong Club has had a highly positive influence on many table tennis aficionados in the neighborhood, with a variety of activities in full swing. At the beginning of 2019, the club extended the rental lease with PVCCC in order to continue serving our community as a great venue for fitness, table tennis, and social activities. At the same time, the club has decided to donate all income from 2018 to UDCA in order to support and promote community services for the Upper Dublin Chinese community.
